C1 English Reading – Short Story & Vocabulary Quiz
Camila, the new manager in charge, had a profound belief in her own superior methods. She found the existing team’s collaborative approach too slow and nuanced. She thought that the system, which the company had adopted, was simplistic and ineffective. Camila, on purpose, decided to implement a new system that would focus on individuals and not teams. She wanted to carry out this change quickly, convinced it would make things at work much better soon. That way, they would finish the project really soon.
Her colleagues, initially excited, soon grew frustrated. The new system, which Eleanor had designed to be straightforward, proved utterly unpredictable in practice. Communication issues appeared, and tasks were duplicated. The transition to the new system wasn’t as simple as she had expected. Deadlines were missed, and clients were disappointed.
Camila had underestimated the situation. The decision she had made on her own had finally backfired. The precariousness of her leadership position became clear, and the employees started thinking that she wasn’t a skilled leader. Camila realized that her initial assessment had been superficial. She felt she had caused chaos at work, and everyone was affected by it. Realizing her error, she called an urgent team meeting. She admitted her mistake and proposed a new, truly collaborative plan. It was a difficult recovery, but slowly, the team began to trust her again, working together to bring the project back on track.
