Story 21 – B1 – The Box

B1 English Reading – Short Story & Vocabulary Quiz

Lily was cleaning out her grandmother’s old attic. Dust filled the air, making the task a bit unpleasant. She found a small, dusty wooden box. It had carvings on its lid. Lily immediately felt fond of it. She sat down, wondering about its history.

This box was clearly very old. There was no obvious way to open it, no lock or hinge. It felt almost silent in her hands, holding its secrets. “What is this hole on the side for?” she muttered, trying to find a clue.

Suddenly, she remembered an old family joke about a hidden compartment. Her grandmother used to say, “True treasures are not always on display.” Lily felt inspired. She gently twisted a part of the carving. With a soft click, the lid popped open. Inside, there was an old letter and a small, smooth stone. It gave her a sense of connection to her past. It was a major moment for her, and she smiled. She wasn’t going to open the letter or flip the stone over. However, she was planning to deliver the box to her grandma. She would probably tell her a fascinating story about her family’s past!
