B1 English Reading – Short Story & Grammar Quiz
The old house in the neighborhood was a bit odd. Locals often said nobody could live there for long. Mr. Henderson, a native of the town, had bought it once but now he doesn’t live there. He must have believed he could fix it. Obviously, he was wrong.
One evening, a young high-school student, Sarah, decided to visit. “If I take photos inside, I will win the school art competition,” she thought. The door was not locked, which was odd. She ought to have brought a flashlight, but she forgot. It had started getting dark.
Inside, the air was thick and dusty. If she had known about the old legend, she would not have gone in. Suddenly, a cold breeze blew, and a wooden pan fell loudly. Sarah jumped! She would rather not stay alone. “I should probably leave now,” she whispered. If anything happened, her family would worry. She had better get out before it was completely dark. She quickly packed her camera and ran outdoors, promising herself never to return.
