Story 7 – C1 – The Weather Forecast

C1 English Reading – Short Story & Vocabulary Quiz

The local weather team had known a time of great advancement. Dr. Aris, a young but smart scientist, would often talk about how good their computer models were. Their daily forecasts were usually correct, thanks to their teamwork. Today’s prediction, though, was on the point of becoming a big mistake.

The morning forecast promised moderate sunshine, with only a few small clouds later. The city believed the experts and planned many outdoor activities. Kids at the local youth camp were likely to spend the whole day at the beach, enjoying the enchanting sea.

By noon, a strange, drab haze started to appear. Aris looked at the new information and felt a frustrating unease. The weather readings showed strange things their models had failed to foresee. Air pressure dropped fast, and winds changed directions suddenly. These were signs of a big, imminent change, completely opposite to their preliminary plan.

Aris tried to predict the new path of the storm, but the information was confusing. Within an hour, the sky turned dark grey. Then, heavy rain and strong winds began.

At the beach, the camp leader, Ms. Elena, quickly gathered the children. The wind made it hard to see, and the rain was brutal. They needed to get back to the camp building, but a large tree had fallen, blocking their usual path. It felt like chaos.

“Stay together!” Elena called, pulling out her phone. The signal was weak, but she managed to contact Aris, explaining their precarious situation. Aris, still in his office, felt a surge of responsibility. He quickly found an old map, identifying a small, rarely used trail through the woods – a radical solution. He guided Elena step by step. Interestingly, the radio connection was clear despite the storm.

Finally, wet but safe, the youth group reached the camp. Parents, who were on the point of panic, rushed to hug their children. Despite the initial bad forecast, Aris’s quick thinking had turned a dangerous situation into a successful rescue. He knew now that even with advancement, predicting nature was never effortless.
