Story 6 – C1 – The Parish

C1 English Reading – Short Story & Grammar Quiz

Bishop Michael has been in charge of St. Jude’s parish for twenty years. He has known every family, every joy, and every burden. Recently, however, the community seemed to be indifferent toward the church. Young people were likely to leave for the cities, and the local economy faced a severe breakdown. The church itself was on the point of needing major repairs, a financial challenge that seemed almost insurmountable.

Michael often walked through the quiet streets. A sense of duty was weighing on him. He knew that without change, the parish was bound to decline further. He would spend hours in thought, seeking a way to breathe new life into his beloved community.

One evening, an idea, almost bizarre in its simplicity, came to him. He proposed transforming the unused church hall into a community hub, offering access to everyone, skills workshops, and a space for local artisans to sell their crafts. There was likely to be resistance from some traditionalists. However, one day, Michael, with his characteristic clarity and calm demeanor, presented his vision to the church members.

He worked tirelessly, securing grants and encouraging collaboration among parishioners. He personally helped paint and renovate. Slowly, the hall transformed. The laughter of children learning to code, the buzz of sewing machines, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. The parish, once facing chaos, found a new purpose. Michael had been to many conferences on community development, but this hands-on approach, born of love for his flock, was his greatest achievement.
