Story 5 – C1 – The financial burden

C1 English Reading – Short Story & Vocabulary Quiz

Leo’s thoughts were overwhelmed by a monetary burden in the last few months. His mother’s medical bills were unexpected and huge. He wasn’t accused of anything, nor blamed directly. Still, the sheer cost felt like a personal obligation. The family savings, once so secure, now showed regression. This made his situation feel increasingly precarious. He longingly wished for a magic solution, but knew only hard work was feasible.

So, he started collecting old furniture. These were the remnants of forgotten homes, found in alleyways and estate sales. He carefully cleaned the debris, appreciating the hidden beauty in their worn textures. His workshop, once neglected, soon became a place of furious activity.

He taught himself to restore, watching countless videos. He’d spend hours lovingly sanding and painting. He transformed battered pieces into something new and appealing. He wasn’t aiming for lavish sales, just honest, steady income. His initial stagnation slowly gave way to small successes. Each restored chair or table felt like a personal victory, a tiny respite from constant worry.

His first major sale brought a rush of relief. It was a mesmerizing feeling of progress. He wasn’t about exploiting anyone. Instead, he was conserving resources and finding value where others saw none. Slowly and painstakingly, the bills began to shrink. One day, the final medical bill was paid. Leo stood in his workshop, no longer burdened. He was surrounded by the tangible proof of his perseverance. The journey had ended, leaving behind not just financial stability but a newfound purpose.
