Story 3 – B2 – The New Library Plan

B2 English Reading – Short Story & Grammar Quiz

Charlotte, a good architect, faced a big challenge. Her latest project was to construct a new civic library with a limited budget. It was a difficult design, needing constant checking of costs. She understood that meeting the tough deadline would involve working long hours and giving up much free time, didn’t it? Her concentration had to be absolute.

One Tuesday morning, a new engineer, Liam, joined her team. Charlotte found him good at his job, but his quiet nature was a bit confusing. During a progress meeting, Charlotte, feeling the pressure, directly asked Liam if they could still aim for the original completion date. Liam’s concern was obvious. He then explained that a very important part of their job was beyond their control.

Charlotte was naturally very worried. The budget was almost gone, and further delays meant extra costs and difficult talks with the committee. Liam, sensing her worry, quickly suggested to find a quick, but safe, alternative. “It’s a tough situation, isn’t it?” he mumbled, looking at the plans. They decided to work extra shifts and together began to brainstorm alternative solutions, set on to deliver the classic design on time, or as close as possible. They knew avoiding further setbacks was their main goal. Their hard work paid off. By combining their skills and staying focused, they managed to complete the library just a few weeks behind schedule, and within the original budget. It was a big success, wasn’t it? The new library became a source of great pride for the whole community!
